Melvin Joseph Labao Dizon

MSW, BA³, LSW

Melvin Joseph Labao Dizon is a transnational philanthropist, licensed social worker, retired U.S. Army Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, and Doctor of Social Work (DSW) candidate at the University of Southern California. Based in Hawai‘i, he is recognized for his leadership in healthcare, philanthropy, crisis management, and community empowerment across the Pacific and beyond.

After 12 years of military service, including deployments in the Middle East, Asia and the Indo-Pacific, Melvin was medically retired in 2018. Undeterred, he embarked on a new journey, earning five university degrees in five years, including a Master of Social Work with dual specializations in Behavioral Mental Health and Health from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Today, as a doctoral scholar, his research focuses on using artificial intelligence and robotics to close healthcare and mental health gaps in underserved communities.

At the Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Melvin provides integrated care for hundreds of patients. His commitment extends beyond patient care to leading policy advocacy, research, and community initiatives that address the social determinants of health. His career includes service on more than 20 executive boards, authorship of numerous publications, and presentations at state and national conferences, as well as recognition with over 20 academic and leadership awards. Among these, he has been honored with the Summa Cum Laude distinction, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge, as well as the Spirit of the Brave Tiger Award for community leadership.

Philanthropy is central to Melvin’s identity. Since 2019, he has contributed over 50,000 volunteer hours, raised and donated over seven figures in funding for community projects, and launched innovative slush funds to support single mothers facing unpaid child support and survivors of domestic violence seeking new beginnings. These efforts underscore his belief that empowered women uplift entire communities—an ethos that aligns closely with the Miss Universe mission of advocacy and empowerment.

“Empowering women isn’t just about equity—it’s about strengthening families, communities, and nations”

— Melvin Joseph Labao Dizon, MSW, BA³, LSW

As an active leader in organizations such as JCI Honolulu and Shriners International, among other professional organizations, Melvin continues to serve as a bridge between cultures, communities, and generations. His ability to learn English, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Hawaiian, Arabic, Farsi, and Pashto not only embodies global citizenship but also facilitates effective communication and understanding across diverse communities. He truly embodies the Filipino diaspora’s spirit of resilience and pride.

Internationally recognized as a “Maverick” leader—an innovative, outside-the-box thinker who embraces bold ideas—Melvin thrives on transformative change and inspiring others to see challenges as opportunities. His journey from a medically retired soldier to a global philanthropist and future doctor reflects a life defined by integrity, resilience, and impact.

By sponsoring Charieze Lianne Cacayorin, Miss Universe Philippines – Hawai‘i 2026 candidate, Melvin reaffirms his belief in the power of representation. He understands that when Filipinos see themselves celebrated on the world stage, it ignites a sense of pride, confidence, and belonging that resonates for generations.

For Melvin, this sponsorship is also profoundly personal. As a Filipino American in Hawai‘i, he views Miss Universe Philippines as a cultural bridge, showcasing the strength of the Filipino diaspora and its enduring contributions to global society. His support goes beyond sponsorship—it is an investment in women’s leadership, cultural diplomacy, and the vision of beauty as a force for advocacy and change.

Her advocacy reflects the very values I’ve dedicated my life to—service, representation, and inspiring the next generation to rise with pride and purpose

Looking ahead, as he prepares to graduate as a Doctor of Social Work in 2027, Melvin intends to continue combining academic research, community service, and global partnerships to drive lasting impact. Through his partnership with Miss Universe Philippines Hawai‘i, he is not only sponsoring Charieze Lianne Cacayorin but also actively participating in the organization's advocacy and empowerment initiatives. He hopes that this collaboration will inspire Filipinos everywhere to dream boldly, serve selflessly, and carry their heritage proudly onto the global stage.

Thank you so much, Melvin, for believing in me and my potential to uplift not only our Filipinos, but our missions to create meaningful impacts on our communities.

What an honor to be part of each others’ journeys and to share the same vision for our communities. Agyamanak la unay!
